What sacrifice is required to become a lawyer by part time school?

I am considering trying to become a lawyer.

I have a full time job that due to economic conditions I obviously dont want to lose.

I am looking at possibly going to law school on a part time basis during the evenings.

Am I barking up the wrong tree? Just from a work hours on top of study hours perspective, is this a crazy under taking?

Any advice is appreciated.

It is crazy. If you have no family and don't care about a social life go for it. What is it like 4 yrs doing nights? There is a glut of lawyers too. United States needs more lawyers like we need swine flu, hopefully when you get out you can find a law job that pays $35,000-$50,000, is it worth it, no not really but hey who cares it is just your life and serious debt?

Here are some examples of what awaits you for your 4 yr struggle + the Bar Exam:

From a recent Boston Craigslist job post by an attorney:

Recently admitted attorney seeking work assisting criminal defense attorneys in any capacity. I have worked with indigent defendants in clinical settings and interned for several excellent defense attorneys and a federal judge, but am finding few opportunities for entry level work in the field. I am proficient (though not fluent) in Spanish, have strong research and writing skills, am passionate about indigent defense, and am an extremely quick learner. I will research, draft motions, conduct interviews, even answer phones, for a low fee of $10 an hour in exchange for the opportunity to observe, and perhaps participate in, actual litigation. References and writing samples available.

Or, From a recent Yahoo Post:

Small general practice law firm located near Columbus, OH. Started at $40K 1.5 years ago after first receiving law license. After 3 months pay was raised to $43K. Had annual review and was told although I had a stellar performance and deserved a raise the office couldn't afford to give me 1. When started was told I should be paid more than they were paying me but they couldn't afford to pay me more. Have several years of paralegal experience. Graduated in top 20% of class. Did internships and clinics during law school. Didn't need much training when started. Feel like starting pay was too low and current pay should be much higher. Can't find much info. on small firm salaries though.

Sound tempting? COME LIVE THE DREAM. Note: these two examples will never show up in a glossy law school brochure. THIS IS REALITY.

How do I go about getting a lawyer or what do I need to do?

Please read my first question about considered cheating. When you read that one let my know what I need to do. I can't afford a lawyer on what I make and be able to support my boys. My parents are missionaries in a different country.

Your husband and his little drinking buddy are both taking advantage of you. I wouldn't stand for it, if it were me. The fact that they both expect you to sit in the house and watch the baby while they sit around drinking outside is absurd. You can start standing up for yourself by telling them you will not be her free babysitter. What would they do if you decided you were going to join them 'round the old campfire? Probably at this point, you wouldn't even consider it, nor would I. However, until you do something regarding your marital situation, I would flatly refuse to watch the baby. Her baby is her responsibility.

With regard to getting a lawyer, try Legal Aid or something like that in your city or county. You might even contact Women's Services of some sort and they can point you in the right direction.

Divorces don't have to cost a fortune and you may be able to find one through the Legal Aid that will allow you to pay based on your income.

I wish you luck and under the circumstances, I think you and your kids would be better off without the jackass. He doesn't sound like he's much of a father, much less a husband.

What form do I file when my ex and her lawyer are withholding important information from me about my kids?

I have joint custody of my children but they live the school year in a different state. My ex & her lawyer continue to fail to inform me about issues involving my kids as well as their filing of an order to Affect Parent-Child Relations. I found out just in enough time to file a response that showed there was no justification for that and documented the fact that I was not given proper notice. They didn't even show to their hearing for it. Also, the therapist is refusing to speak to me or provide me with any reports of my kids therapy although I stipulated in the Custody Agreement that I was to be given the same information the Mother is. Now my ex has moved to a new address in their town and I can not get the lawyer, my ex or the therapist to even return my call much less give the new address. I want to remain pro per and need to know what form to file against their negligence and refusal to provide information. What can I do to enforce that I am kept informed as stated in the orders?

Contact an attorney ASAP. If you cannot afford one try your local legal aid office.

You can start by getting your own attorney. Your attorney will take care of this, and if he/she doesn't they are breaching their rules of professional conduct (which are legally punishable).

A motion for an order to show cause why both ex and lawyer should not be held in contempt. The lawyer for the false certificate of service saying he sent you a copy of the last motion, and the ex for not complying with the divorce decree.

How do I go about becoming a lawyer in the army?

I want to become a lawyer. Is there a way the army will pay for this? I am fine with a contract after school.

me too! me too!

What is the difference between solicitor and lawyer?

What is the job of a solicitor and lawyer and what is the difference?

Which is the one that works in a firm and doesn't require going to court?

Thanks a lot!

My simplistic understanding is a solicitor draws up paperwork, contracts, when you buy a house etc. A lawyer will more likely help you sue people, go to court etc (although that is more a barrister in court - but the lawyer advises these things as a first step).

The lines are blurred, and many professional offices have all these, and work in together. You may need a licence to practice some of this in some countries.

A solicitor will rarely, if ever, go to court. A lawyer will sometimes. A barrister is always in court. Again, my simplistic understanding.

There are two types of lawyer - a solicitor and a barrister. A barrister works in the courts and wears the wig and gown (sometimes) A solicitor often works in a firm and would handle day to day stuff like conveyancing and family disputes etc. A solicitor is generally salaried whreas a barrister is usually self employed, receiving work from solicitors on behalf of clients who need representation.

Solicitors are generally in Europe.

Lawyers are generally in the USA.

That's it.

Can a malaysian lawyer practice both criminal defense and prosecution?

I mean,in malaysia,I want to be a criminal lawyer. But I'm not sure whether can a lawyer in Malaysia perform persecution and criminal defense at the same time?

I think that performing persecution would be outlawed. One lawyer acting for defence and prosecution at the same time, on the same case, should never happen!

What is the procedure in becoming a lawyer for the Air Force?

Well I am 17 and I have always wanted to be a lawyer in the Air Force, and I am planning on going through the Air Force ROTC program and becoming an officer...However, I am wondering is there a way to go directly from the ROTC program into the Air Force JAG corp?

Thank You for any answers you all might provide.

In order to become a lawyer in the Air Force you must have graduated from a North Central recognized School of Law. You must also have passed a Bar Exam in any one of the 50 states of the Union. Then you can join the Air Force and become a military lawyer.

To do all of this you must (1) graduate high school; (2) receive a four year undergraduate degree from a North Central Association recognized college or university; (3) graduate from a School of Law; (4)pass the Bar Exam; and (5)meet the minimum moral and physical requirements to join the US Air Force.

So, at least 7 to 8 more years before you achieve your dream. Do you have the "stuff" to make it?

Yes. You need to speak with your recruiter or future commanding officer. Your performance in ROTC will be a factor in your selection to JAG.

What can a lawyer discover when they do an asset check?

Suppose someone wants to sue me for personal injury. If they want a lawyer to take the case on a contingency(?) basis then the lawyer runs an asset check on me, right? Will he or she be able to find out about assets such as cash, stocks, IRA? Or is that information private?

Generally a lawyer will not do much of an asset check prior to taking on the case. In depth investigation costs money. They may just verify that the defendant has insurance. If there is no insurance, chances are they won't take the case because everyone that has assets that are worth pursuing will have insurance to protect those assets. On the other hand, if there is no insurance (maybe it just lapsed briefly), they may try to find out if the Defendant has a decent job or owns property.

When it comes to collecting a judgment, however, an attorney will stop at nothing to find assets. Generally, a judgment debtor can be compelled by the Court to divulge all assets, and if the debtor tries to hide anything, they could risk being thrown in jail for contempt.

Good luck!

depends on how deep they want to dig. When it comes to money a lawyer will use a might deep shovel.

thye can find anything that is in your name and SS#

Everything that has a paper trail they will follow. You could be in deep s___t.

I don't think your premise is correct. In New York - you can only check the assets via an "information subpoena" AFTER the other guy has gotten a judgment against you. Before that point - like now - he has no right to know what you have. What he does have a right to know is your insurance status.

This is not legal advice. Contact your insurance agent immediately. They will then make arrangements for you to have an attorney. That's why you pay your premiums.

What are the requirements to become a lawyer in Australia?

I live in South Australia and I am in year 11 at high school. I get mostly good grades (except for maths which I got a C in but I think I can improve) and really want to become a lawyer, but i do not know what the requirements are. What subjects will I need to do in year 12 and what grades will I have to get? Also, what score do you have to get to study law at Uni?

It depends on the university that you wish to apply to on what exit score you will need to get. Your best bet would be to pick a uni and go to their website, all unis have course structures on their website.

It shouldn't matter too heavily on what subjects you take in year12 but law would help haha

Hoped that helped abit, the best help I could give though would be to refer you to the universities website, they will have everything (and more) for you ^.^

How likely is it that I can become a lawyer?

I would like to become a lawyer for my career in life. I'm pretty intelligent, and have been wanting to be a lawyer. However, I realize this is a popular and well wanted career. What tips can you give me in making it? Also; what areas of the USA need lawyers the most lawyers? Do I even stand a chance these days of becoming a lawyer?

Lawyers are needed everywhere. You need a Bachelor's degree first. Contact school counselors at schools you find in your area or if you have really good grades try to get into a good school in your part of the country but don't worry as much about being further away from home. Some schools have good reputations and if you can maintain a GPA above 3.5 you should go to a better university if you can afford it. Ask the guidance counselors at the school if they have scholarships you may be eligible for and how to go about getting scholarships. I think you can become a lawyer as long as you can maintain a GPA of 2.0 and then be able to study and pay for the bar. Lawyers are paid very well.

u do first complete your graduation in law ( LLB )

register yourself in the bar council at the place where u want to practice as a lawyer

to become a successful lawyer,

you gotta learn the art of tellin' lies.

A good lier is a damn good lawyer

well you need to go to college........

and do well.... take classes that emphaisis reading and writing and speaking......

and then you will talk the lsat your junior or senior year of college and apply to law schools

doing an internship at a law firm or office could be helpful for you

How do you stop calls from a lawyer who is looking for your neighbor?

Apparently my neighbor owes this lawyer something--I don't know what's going on--and he is continually calling my apartment even though he knows she does not live here. I think she is avoiding him and he is trying to get to her though us.

He calls every single day! Most of the time I avoid him though privacy director, but how can I get him to stop?

Something suspicious is going on with this situation. Something is just not right. I can't see a lawyer calling you for that kind of information, unless you at some time made it seem like you wanted to help. Maybe you were just too polite the first he called to ask if you know if the neighbor is still living there or something. Otherwise, it's pointless and pretty obviously going to get him into trouble eventually if yor are telling him to leave you alone. Are you sure it is a lawyer? Maybe it is just somebody, like an ex-boyfriend, who is trying to get your cooperation by pretending to be a lawyer. You apparently have the number he calls from, so try a reverse look-up and see if that comes up with a name that you can verify is an attorney. If he's give you a name, check the phone book to match the name to the number or call your local or state bar association to see if they can match the name to the number.

If he turns out to be an attorney, take the next call and tell him (fimly but politely) that you don't want any more calls and, if he persists, that you will file for a restraining order and report him to the bar association. And if he calls after that, contact your own attorney and do exactly that. If you can record the call telling him telling him to stop calling and any subsequent calls, that's the best evidence you could have. (State laws vary about when you can record a conversation. You don't need to be sneaky in this situation; if you're recording the calls, tell him.)

If it is not an attorney, after all, call the police and tell them what's been going on. There are a lot of whackos out there, your caller seems to be one of them. He might be stalking your neighbor. He might even be stalking you and just using the neighbor as a smokescreen. You need to find out.

You could also talk to the neighbor and ask if she know's what's up. You don't have to anything her and she doesn't have to do anything for you, but you might have a common interest in doing something together. Who knows until you try?

And if the calls keep coming, your ultimate option is to change to an unlisted number.

You have the right to remain silent on this matter. Inform the lawyer that he is violating your right to privacy.

Tell him the next time he calls you are having the operator place a trace on the call and are going to file harassment charges.

Sue him for harassement, but ask if he knows a good lawyer first

tell him you have nothing to do with your neighbor and to stop harassing you, i actually think its illegal. tell him if he doesnt stop youll have to get the authority's involved. or can you block your number from his.

This is illegal and is considered harrassment, if you have asked him to stop calling you. Record his messages or conversations and notify your phone company and possibly the police dept.

try telling the lawyer this: i didn't want to tell you this before as it's none of your business but that person owes me money and i want to catch up with her first so i can get paid. if you see her, please let me know and i'll do the same.

In many states, this would be considered harassment and you could file for a restraining order that prohibits the lawyer form contacting you. This conduct may also violate the rules of professional ethics for your state, so I would suggest filing a complaint with the state bar as well.

This is actually illegal in most states.

I would tell him that you don't know this person and if he calls you again, you will seek a lawyer for harassment.

Or tell him the people have moved out.

I believe as most have stated this is illegal and tell him that your reporting him to the bar.

next time he calls tell him and tell him that hes got tha wrong number and give him tha right number

Sounds like harrassment to me. Tell him to stop calling or you will report him to the phone company or the police.

Call the phone company and block his number so he can't call you. If it gets really bad, tell the police.

What type of lawyer should I use to take someone to court for non payment as agreed?

I need to take someone to court because of not paying back as agreed. What type lawyer do I need and does anybody know of a REALLY good lawyer in the Georgia and SC. I don't care how much they cost, I just want the best of the best

It depends upon if a contract was involved. Does your contract specifically state that this is a secured loan? Contact a contractual or business attorney if its due to a business arrangement. Otherwise seek a General Practice Attorney.

non payment of how much and for what. you leave out circumstances and expect an answer. get a contract lawyer if it is over a contract.

You dont need to hire a lawyer. Just file a claim and bring them to small claims court. No lawyer is needed there. I think your claim can be up to 5000 dollars but you should check to see what the limit is in your state

What type of lawyer do i need and how old do i have to be to prosecute in the state of texas?

what criminal case do i have i want to press charges on my dad for telling lies and persecuting my mom for no reason behind it and telling false lies about. Stuff that didnt happend. Lieing on the stand and telling lies so he could gain custody. What should i do i am only 17 years old. It would be a little to early to prosecute now i would have to wait till i am 18 to get a lawyer? And what type lawyer would i need?

Not sure what kind of lawyer you need but here's some extremely valuale tips on things you should know before hiring one. Good luck!

http://www.socalattorneyfinder.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=47:lawyersarticle&catid=1:latest-news

There is no private criminal prosecution in the u.s., If you have knowledge of a crime, notify he local police. The police can investigate and report to the DA. The decision to use taxpayer money to seek a criminal conviction is reserved to the DA. Telling lies about people is usually not a crime. Perjury is a crime, but it is very difficult to prove and is rarely prosecuted. "persecution" has no specific meaning and I don't know if you are trying to describe a crime or not.

You can't prosecute a criminal case. The state prosecutes criminal cases. You don't even have legal standing to sue your father in civil court since your mother is the person who has been "persecuted."

What are the requirments and things you need to know to become a lawyer?

I know lawyers need to be good public speakers, good writers, and reserchers. But what are the other requirements for a career such as this. I mean like to become a court lawyer, or a corpal. I mean give me real advice. I would personaly like it from a lawyer too.

Know? Lots and lots. Most of the required knowledge is covered through the professional degree of Juris Doctor (JD). To earn the JD, in the US you need to get into, attend, and pass law school. Most states require an ABA-accredited school, which is a 3-year program (some do it in as little as 2.5, some 4+).

Then, after graduating, you need to study for and pass the bar exam (one per state that you intend to be licensed in). This is a 2-3 day substantive test that makes sure you know how to think like a lawyer. The specific subjects vary by state, but most of them (though not all) will be subjects you have taken in law school. Most people (including me) spend 2-3 months full time after graduation just studying for the bar.

Most states also require you pass a Professional Responsibility (ethics) test, which separately tests your knowledge of the ethical duties of being an attorney. Most states also require a moral character determination, where you have to convince the state you are ethical, and that your friends think you are ethical.

As far as general knowledge, public speaking is necessary for litigators and those who want to practice in a court or to teach. Writing and research are essential, and school only covers the rough edges of this. One of the reasons I spend so much time on Yahoo Answers (while studying for the California Bar in July) is to practice my writing abilities. Any practice helps.

But most importantly, to be a good lawyer (not to pass the bar, but to actually succeed), you need to be able to separate your emotional reactions from your logic. You need to be able to look at issues from many different perspectives, including those you may be personally opposed to. This gives you the ability to prepare not only your side, but to prepare against the other side.

The same skill applies when representing a client whose views you may not agree with. This is less of an issue in the corporate world, but even there you need to be able to explain to friends and co-workers that your represent the company, not them, and that anything they tell you can be disclosed to the company.

Lawyers operate under strict ethical requirements, including absolute loyalty to your clients, candor (truthfulness) to the court and in all business proceedings, and constant studying. Violation of these requirements is grounds for being disbarred, which means potentially never practicing law again. Sadly, many of these ethical constraints get muddied bent and often broken as attorneys practice, largely because that's what other lawyers do and following the rules with integrity puts you at a tactical disadvantage.

It's a difficult profession, and a long road. Many who graduate from law school use their degree for something else, like politics or corporate compliance, or undergraduate teaching. But the law is like the sea -- some people may hate it, but for others it gets into your blood. Even those of us who hate litigation find other ways to practice, such as being a corporate attorney. It's not for everyone, but at its core it is a noble profession.

Good luck.

Besides personal qualities, you need to get a bachelor's degee, then take the LSAT to get into a law school, then earn a law degree (J.D. - juris doctor), and then pass the bar exam and MPRE (multistate professional responsibility exam).

Step One: Pay a lot of money to whatever school will accept you.

Step Two: Pass the bar

That's about it- Most lawyers are idiots, so don't worry about having any special skills or abilities

debate, know whats going on and what u need in order to get the jury or the judges side.

my niece went to college four years and majored in political science then 3 years to law school.you can only practice in the state in which you take the bar exam. She is an attorney in N.C. and making huge dollars, she is a criminal lawyer but also handles bankruptcies

Coragryph (1st answer) gave you an excellent answer.

What he forgot to include is that you have to realize that the people who want your services ("clients") are usually liars and only want your services because they do not want to accept responsibilities for their actions.

Or, they want you to help them gain something to which they are not entitled.

Occasionally, you'll actually deal with an honest, respectable human being, but it will be very rare when it occurs. And, you won't make much money because they will settle before going to court with a minimum of litigation or effort on your part.

Good luck (stock up on air freshener, it helps remove the stench when you get "clients" out of your office).

The first requirement is to have sold your Soul. I think there is a category on Ebay for that.

sorry Toodles, but i have no idea (as u very well know) and i am just answering because u told me to.

good memory lots of reading past cases 8 years of collage passing the bar exam and knowing what branch of law you would like to study.

What classes can help me become a lawyer?

I would like to become a lawyer for my career. I was wondering what type of college courses should I take? Should I take Political Science, pshychology, Criminal Justice? ect? Thanks, it would be greatly appreciared.

All that you mentioned, plus Speech, Sociology, English, Writing, Legal Terminology, Computer Courses (basic Windows, etc), Debate. You should have a well rounded knowledge of how people behave and interact and how the law works, how to write professionally and how to speak in public. Good luck!

Jeremy

I'd also like to see assertiveness classes and public speaking added to that list.

What kind of lawyer/attourney would I need to talk to, to look over a contract agreement of employment?

My husband is going to be working for his dad (who owns his own company) his dad wants him to become partners with him eventually. I want to write up a contract of his employment to secure my husbands spot in the company. To make it fair for us and for his dad. I want to take the contract to a lawyer to look at to make sure everything is legitimate. I don't know what type of lawyer I need to take it to.

Help?

Almost any attorney who practices civil law can review a contract for effectiveness but a lawyer who concentrates on Business contract law would be your best choice.~

For information about lawyer i found in the link below that have understood about lawyer.

What is the fastest way of becoming a lawyer.?

I'm a freshman in high school and i have always wanted to be a lawyer in New York City. I was told that i should take two years of college then become a paralegal for a few years before returning to school for five years to become a lawyer. I've been thinking that maybe i should just go straight into school for seven years and pop out a lawyer. Is there a shorter way to become a lawyer? Is there a better way?

you have to go to school and then pass the bar

Warning: Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!!! The main reason is we just have WAY TOO MANY attorneys!!! We have a GLUT of lawyers!!!

So even IF you do make it through law school, you probably won't be able to find a job when you get out. There are a LOT of lawyers today working as Legal Secretaries and/or Paralegals because they cannot find a job.

If you are not sure if you want to be a lawyer, go to your school's guidance counselor and ask to take a "Vocational Test" - this is not a real test, but rather a test about your likes and skills. This would better direct you to the field that you would be the best in. This also would be a LOT cheaper than going through law school, becoming an attorney and then finding out that you HATE it. There are a lot of miserable lawyers out there.

If you are planning on becoming a lawyer...after you graduate get your bachelors. (4 years). Then you need to go to law school (another 3 years). I would skip the Paralegal degree and just go to school. There is no short way. After you graduate law school you will then need to pass your State's bar exam. Until you pass the exam you will not be a lawyer.

There is no fast way to become a lawyer unless you take accelerated courses in college. That means you should take as many hours per semester that the university allows and also go to school in the summer. This way you can graduate in 3 years instead of 4. Here are the steps you need to take:

1. You need to go to college and get a Bachelor's degree. You can get this degree in any field you chose, but I would suggest Political Science or Pre-Law since these majors prepare you the best for law school. If you know what area of law you want to practice, you could major in something related to that field as well. Do your research for that.

2. After you graduate (or when you are about to graduate) from college, you will need to take the LSAT. I've taken this test. It's VERY hard. So prepare a lot. I would suggest taking a prep course through Kaplan (www.kaplan.com) and getting a tutor. Since you're still young and have quite a bit of time before you take the LSAT, I'd suggest going to a book store and buying an LSAT prep book while you're still in high school so that you can start getting familiar with the kinds of questions they ask and the way of thinking that is required. (they don't ask the typical math, science, history, reading questions like most tests, so don't freak out!)

3. Register for the LSAT at www.lsac.org. After you take the LSAT, you can start applying to law school. You will also need letters of recommendation (mostly, from professors in college) and your transcript from college.

4. You can graduate from law school in less than 3 years if you take more credit hours, but I would not suggest this as law school is very difficult and will require a lot of your time.

5. After law school, you will have to take and pass the BAR. Once you pass the BAR, you will get sworn in and receive your license. This is the ONLY way to become a lawyer.

I would not suggest becoming a paralegal first because you will still need to go to school to get a Bachelor's degree and a Juris Doctorate (aka Law Degree). This is actually a SLOWER approach to becoming a lawyer, but it does provide a lot of experience which could be useful.

P.S. I'm not sure what kind of writing tips you are looking for. What kind of writing would you like to do?

GOOD LUCK!!

Why is Atticus Finch considered a good lawyer in To Kill a Mockingbird?

Not morally, why is he a skilled lawyer? What tactics does he use in presenting the Tom Robinson case? I know nothing about being a lawyer and I was curious.

He asks alot of good questions. He continously asks Mayella where she got hit, how hard she got it, where it took place. He also asks Bob Ewell to write for him, and other things that you wouldnt think mattered. By doing this, he got stories from people that contradicted eachother, so he could find out what really happened.

he does his job and follows the rules

Lawyer?????

Does anyone now good lawyer instate of MI for drunk drivng ticket

Look in the phone book under attorney's and look for criminal attorney.

You can get the best lawyers from www.usalegalcare.com. I had a wonderful experience with these people.

Go to http://www.usalegalcare.com/drunk_driving.htm.

All the best

Go to http://www.targetlaw.com and do a search for drunk driving lawyer

Depends, what county did you get it in, and what was your blood alcohol level? I used to work at a prosecutor's office and did quite a few OWI trials, if I can't help you I coudl probably recommend someone who can.

Lawyer....?

Lawyer is a popular career but is it because of the money or because of other reasons like people would know how to defend themselves better if they get into a fight or people would not mess with them.

I think people go in to law because they want to make good money and have a prestigious career, but are lousy in science. There are a select few who sincerely love law, but they are th exception rather than the law. I highly doubt knowing how to deal with someone in a fight would be a compelling reason to pursue a career in law.

Lawyer...?

what makes a good lawyer?

can anyone get into Harvard Law?

i really think a good lawyer is somone who doesn't back down even if they come to find out there wrong they argue until they find an issue to bring up that will make them look good.

not just anyone can get into Harvard Law. u have to have atleast a 4.0 and score high on ur ACT's

A good lawyer is someone who makes points that can't be argued and traps the opposition in a corner for the judge to see. And not just anyone can get into Harvard law... You must be brilliant!

Lawyer...........?

I am not in any honors. My teacher and English department told me i am not smart or good enough to be in a AP English class in High School.....does this mean i wont be successful in life or cant become a Lawyer.

No, it means you haven't shown your teachers yet that you have waht it takes to take the honor's classes. Work hard this year to get the best grades you can. Don't just do the assigned work, go above and beyond, especially in classes you have problems with. Make a point of asking the teacher for help if you don't completely 100% understand something.

Continue with this through college. Work your tail off to get a high GPA. You can get into law school with lower GPAs, but those schools aren't as good and you generally end up with lower paying jobs. If you want to go to law school immediately after college, start studying for the LSAT your junior year. If you can afford a prep course, take one. Good luck.

No. People who have dropped out of high school have become lawyers. People who have spent time in prison have become lawyers. Anybody can become a lawyer if they put forth enough effort.

What is a good lawyer speech for an audition?

I have an audition next week for the part of a lawyer. They want to see me do a scene of my own choice as a lawyer.

I don't want to do that "You can't handle the truth" speech from A Few Good Men, as it's overdone.

It just needs to be one of those clever speeches that a lawyer delivers, about 1 minute long.

Anybody got any ideas? It could be from anything like LA Law, Matlock, Rumpole of the Bailey, or any TV show or movie.

There is a great speech from To Kill A Mockingbird. It is given by Atticus Finch:

There is one way in this country in which all men are created equal. There is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein, and the ignorant man the equal of any college president. That institution, gentlemen, is a court. Be it the Supreme Court of the United States or the humblest J.P. court in the land, or this honorable court which you serve. Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.

What is the going rate for a lawyer to draft a will?

What is an average cost to have a lawyer draft up a simple will? I don't need anything that complicated but what I do have I want protected.

250

look in the yellow pages for some trusts and estates lawyers in your area, call up 3 of them and ask how much they charge for a will. there is nothing wrong with asking how much they charge, it shows you are a smart consumer

How much do they charge for 1/2 hour? If you really need a "simple" will, the attorney will spend more time determining that fact than plugging the details into the form on their computer.

You may want to look into a pre-paid legal plan. Sometimes that is the cheapest way to go and then you have coverage in case you need an attorney for something else. You can also get softwear that will help you do it yourself. But to be safe it would be better to use an attorney.

How do you find a lawyer in NYC to take on a case that entails a doctor sexually assaulting his patient?

A doctor has sexually fondled his patient during a routine visit it's already been reported to the hospital and the doctor has been suspended. How does this patient go about finding a lawyer to take on this possible case. Are there law firms that specialize in these kind of cases?

There are thousands of lawyers who will take a case like that. You can look in the phone book or ask people you know who they recomend. The lawyer will not charge you anything to represent you until you win. They will take about 30% of any money you win from the doctor or hospital or both. Most cases like that are settled with a cash offer before they go to court.

Why is Atticus Finch considered a good lawyer in To Kill a Mockingbird?

Not morally, why is he a skilled lawyer? What tactics does he use in presenting the Tom Robinson case? I know nothing about being a lawyer and I was curious.

For Atticus, being a lawyer is not just a job, it’s a personal commitment to justice, and to solving problems through the law rather than through violence. There’s another reason for his taking on the Tom Robinson case, however, and that’s that he had no choice: Judge Taylor assigned him to the case.

From Shmoop/Atticus/To Kill A Mockingbird

in the book he uses his closing statement to point out that tom roninson had clearly no way of being able to hit the mayella due to the fact that his, i believe his right arm was pretty much not of any use to him, and he also pointed out to the jury that the Mayella ewell and her family are known to be, i suppose you could say, liars.

Lawyer.............?

I hate when people tell people they cant do this or do that go in that AP class or become a Lawyer, because your not in any honor classes in high school. My argument is that anyone can do it as long is that you put your mind to it. Just study. This is why i hate honor kids they think there so much better. Whereas my cousin went to the worst school in Brooklyn Kingsborough and winded up being a lawyer.....anyone agree

It really depends on the individuals ambitions.

.

Sadly, putting your mind to it is sometimes not enough. Some people are better at different things. I am great in math but I wouldn't do well in AP History or Art, because my reading comprehension is not high enough and I can't draw a decent stick-figure.

Teachers REALLY want what is best for you. They know how difficult their course is. Besides, why would you want to force yourself to do 3 hours of homework per night in an AP class when you can get by with one hour in a regular class. If the AP class is in your strong area, then yes you would want to do it because you want to know everything you can learn in that area.

Plenty of lawyers and doctors never had an AP class, but people trying to get into a college with competitive admissions need the AP classes in their transcript.

Maybe they are speaking from a competition stand point. If you don't take the challenging courses in high school it could indicate you are not capable of doing the work.

What type of lawyer do I need to write legalities on my website?

I have a new website that I am launching selling items that are made to order. I need a lawyer that deals with writing legalities for the site as well as dealing with copyright issues. What type of lawyer should I seek and could I find one online?

A general practitioner will fit the bill the best. Pull up your state bar directory by googling xxxx(your state) bar membership directory or use the lawyers.com directory. Then choose business lawyers. Then make some calls. (incidentally for more on the copyright question you need to be specific. Copyright law is practiced by IP (intellectual property) lawyers.

If you are making physical things for people, there are two things you are dealing with 1) the tech issues for how to take custom orders (not a legal issue) and 2) the contract language when the persons makes the order.

If you you want to DIY, then google around finding other similar sites that look professionally done and copy what they appear to be doing. Most states are covered under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) which provides that made to order items must be paid for when ordered unless the product does not match the order.

good luck

What type of lawyer protects the victims of violent crimes?

I have decided to switch majors and am wanting to do something with law.

What is the type of lawyer who stands up for victims of violent crimes?

(Ex: The case of Caylee Anthony or any other lawyer involved in a violent crime case who helps find one guilty of murder or something.)

You're talking about a prosecutor.

Stop right where you are. To become a lawyer, you have to go to law school. To get in, you need a degree - any degree. Get a degree in something that will get you a job. Law school costs - a lot. A bad school will cost you around $150,000 after college. Moreover, there's a glut of lawyers in this country. Many can't get jobs and most have staggering student debt. District attorneys have their pick of the crop and the job pays almost nothing.

Generally that would be a district attorney. There are some who specialize in cases involving, children or sexual assault victims, etc. You usually find this in larger jurisdictions like major cities. A strong background in criminal law would be very helpful for this focus.

Whats the difference between Paralegal and a Lawyer?

Can someone please inform me the difference between a Paralegal and a Lawyer? What can one do that the other can't?

A lawyer has undergone 3 yrs of excruciating law school (after obtaining a bachelors degree) after which they have to study for and pass their state's bar exam to be admitted into the bar and allowed to practice law in that state. Lawyer's are able to give legal advice and represent client's in all types of legal matters (except small claims court). They generally make very good money but work very long hours in a high stress job. They also can be reprimanded by their state bar for any inappropriate conduct.

Paralegals have no formal requirement or license. They can have a specialized degree (certificate program, associates or bachelors) but it is not required. Paralegals are not governed by any organization whereas lawyers are governed by the state bar and american bar association. Paralegals work under direct supervision of an attorney (even paralegals that represent individuals at administrative tribunal proceedings work for a firm where they are under direct supervision of an attorney...don't get confused by the other answers-paralegals cannot solely represent anyone, that would be the unauthorized practice of law). Paralegals perform the legal work that the attorney can't be bothered with (because for attorneys: time = a lot of money). Paralegals generally work cases very closely, have substantial contact with clients, do legal research, prepare legal documents and pleadings, file documents with the appropriate court, and often attend hearings/trials with the attorney.

In a nutshell, to be an attorney it is going to cost someone over 7 years and $100,000+ for just the education requirements. Sure they make a lot of money after a few years of practice but the stress level is so high that it is far from a luxurious job. I feel that being a paralegal is the best of both worlds. You don't have to spend a lot of time or money on an education (I only have my associates in paralegal studies) but you still get the rewarding parts, such as helping people in need and a great salary.

a lawyer has gone to law school and passed the bar exam. a paralegal

is a certificate program. a paralegal can do everything a lawyer does

except defend someone at a trial. they can go to trial with someone

going to administrative court though.

3-4 years of HARD grueling work at a Law school.... then you have to take a Bar exam before your "considered" a lawyer. The Bar exam varies from state to state. Lawyers can represent a client, paralegals do a lot of the work but don't understand the laws

Plegal do the research and paperwork - lawyers take the credit for it all.

What should we do if our lawyer isn't trying to help us anymore?

It's hard for us to fire him because we don't have anymore money to hire a new one. But this lawyer we have right now is not replying to our emails or phone calls. He's not answering all our questions regarding our case (mom divorcing dad because he abandoned us).

We tried looking for free lawyers but people we talk to keep transferring us to different people.

The lawyer we have right now is frustrating us that we just want to get rid of him but couldn't because we still need his help.

I don't know what to do.

You need to talk to a law society or ring a few solicitors and get the low down on whats what.

Is it unethical for a lawyer to represent a family friend against the family friend's spouse?

This couple divorced some years ago, and the husband is being represented by a mutual family friend. The couple knew the lawyer in question as they were growing up, and were close friends with the lawyer's parents. Is this an ethical client-lawyer relationship? This is happening in the state of Florida, if it makes a difference.

sounds fine to me

if the lawyer knows private or secret stuff about the person he is not representing, it might be conflict of interest, or something like that.

What are the documents a lawyer needs to give you once your house purchase is completed?

I bought a house in September in London and the lawyer just sent me the documents related to the completion of the purchase. there is a document from the land registry and a few documents related to some company giving a guarantee that the house is free from wood rot.

Can you tell me if there are any other documents related to the ownership of the house that the lawyer should give me. I'm particularly concerned that there is no plan for the land I own - no description of how much land space is owned with the house etc. I'm even more worried because the lawyer is totally disorganised and I wonder what else she has missed.

It depends whether or not you took out a mortgage. You will, in time, receive the title deeds to the property from the land registry, but it can take up to a year for the changes to be made.

If you purchased the house outright, the title deeds will come to you. If you have taken a mortgage then the deeds will go to the institution who gave you the mortgage, but you can ask for a copy.

The title deeds will show the plans and boundaries for your property.

Hope this helps.

How long does it take a lawyer to file a lawsuit?

How long does it take a lawyer to file a personal injury lawsuit? Will I received a copy of it in the mail? How would I know when it as already been filed?

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I was injured once when a truck backed over my right foot at work. My employer tried to settle with me fast because I knew they were try to get me to sign some papers to release them from responsibility. I called a nearby injury lawyer in my area who provided me useful advice and I was able to get a small settlement to cover my insurance bills that weren't covered by my work insurance. I'd find a lawyer in your area. http://www.accidentlawyerlocator.com My accident lawyer was help me because they hope to make some money at the same time. Try calling a lawyer to see if they can help.

Heop everything works out.

For this question, I am assuming that you are the Plaintiff. Now prior to filing a lawsuit, the lawyer has to perform an "independent investigation" wherein he essentially checks out your story and makes sure the law warrants filing a lawsuit for whatever your injury entails.

Once the lawyer is satisfied that you have a valid claim, then he needs to comply with any pre-suit procedural steps. The other poster mentioned that for some kinds of defendants, like cities, you have to provide them with notice that you are considering suing them and why. They then have "X" number of days to respond and try to settle the matter.

If there are no procedural steps, or if they are satisfied, the lawyer then has to draft the Complaint (the "lawsuit") and file it with the court. After filing, the Complaint must be personally served on each defendant. This can take a while depending on whether or not the defendants try to duck service, or if they are out of state, etc. Once each defendant is served, they get "X" number of days to answer.

Typically, once the lawsuit is filed and/or served, your lawyer will send you a copy of the filed Complaint. You are always welcome to call him (although I strongly recommend not calling every day - these things don't happen at lightspeed) or his assistant to check on the status of your case. You should also be receiving regular letters or phone calls from your attorney letting you know where things stand. Keep in mind, it is his or her responsibility to keep you informed of what's going on.

If you are the Defendant, you will be served with the Writ soon after the court receives it. However, if you are the Plaintiff, its likely your lawyer will try to save you money by not generating more paper and time ... you should be in touch with your lawyer's secretary on a regular basis to see how the case is progressing.

How long does it take? There are limitation dates by which time your lawyer must file a law suit. Where I live, we must file within 2 years of a car accident, or within 1 year of the time the incident happened in other matters (eg. if I get hurt by a teammate while playing hockey). If I'm suing the City, I have only 6 months to file against them! Limitation dates can vary for different types of lawsuits and also depending on the jurisdiction. Check with your lawyer's secretary.

Every personal injury claim must be filed within a certain amount of time or it will expire; if a claim expires, you will lose your chance to collect compensation.

More Info:

http://Find-Accident-Lawyer.com

Consultations should be free. Personal injury lawyers should not charge you to talk about your case and should give you an idea of what they think your case is likely to be worth in compensatory and other possible damages. The accident attorney should also be able to give you some idea of how long it should take to get results.

Personal injury lawyers will often take your case on a "contingency fee basis." Which means they will not charge any legal fees for their services until after they have helped you recover financial compensation.

If your personal injury lawyer is willing to provide the necessary funds to keep your case moving forward, it is a good sign. After all, the lawyer is taking a gamble by doing so because if you don’t receive a settlement they will not likely be reimbursed for those fees and they will be out that money. Their willingness to provide these funds towards you case is a good indicator that they believe that you have a reasonably strong case.

How does a person get a lawyer to cooperate with the settling of a credit card judgement?

The judgement was found through a credit search. The lawyer has made no attempt to contact said person over the past 7 yrs. The interest continues to rise and they won't settle or release so that said person can purchase a home. Do they have the right to just let the amount continue to get higher?

Depending on the state where you live, judgments can last up to 10 years (my state is one such state).

You can't stop lawyer from pursing money owed to his client. Only courses of action would be for you to 1- offer to pay on creditor's terms, 2-continue to not pay and wait out the next 3 years, 3- look for a mortgage lender whose underwriter will overlook that debt.

How long from the time my lawyer submits my claim to the insurance will I get paid?

Feb 2 2006 I was hurt In an automobil. My lawyer submitted my claim in dec 2006, how long will I have to wait for a setalment.

It can be 2-3 years . . . depends on how much you're asking for, and if the insurance company thinks it's reasonable, or if they're willing to fight you in court to get a lower settlement.

few days to a few years.

You are paying your lawyer 35% of your settlement so I would ask him how long he thinks it will take. Make him earn his money.

There are way too many factors involved in settling insurance claims to give you accurate answer. I have worked in the claims business for 18 years and the best thing you as the injured person can do is stay on your lawyer and make sure they call the claims adjuster every week until they get an offer.

Hearing backlogs vary all around the country . . .

You need to ask your attorney when the hearing will be .

How long does it take a lawyer to request medical records in NY?

How long does it take "your" lawyer to request your medical records? I already signed a release form when i first hired them? I had surgery not to long ago. I live in the state of NY. Does NY have a certain time on how long it take to request medical records?

to request them...5 min. getting them another thing. Better to go yourself and get them.......

I don't know about NY per se, but I know in Canada, it can take up to 12 weeks, depending on how extensive a report you are seeking.

Also, always anticipate another 2 week delay in your lawyer sending in the request and then once received, reviewing the materials and advising you. This may sound steep, but they have lots of clients with lots to deal with.

What exactly is a will lawyer, and what would one have to do to become one?

I am writing a story and it involved a transcript between a customer and a will lawyer. Do you call them something other than 'Will lawyers'? What does a person have to do, study, pay for to become a lawyer who specialized in wills and living wills?

Those attorneys are called probate attorneys, but most general practice firms have that under their umbrella of practice. To be a probate attorney you have to do the same thing as any other attorney, finish law school and pass the bar exam in your respective state. When in law school though, if someone knows what they want to specifically practice, there is always the availability to take courses that concentrate on that specific area.

They are usually called probate attorneys. You have to go to lawschool and pass the bar exams.

What is the role of a lawyer in a Mergers and Acquisitions transaction?

I would like to study law and this is a topic which I will have to present at school. Basically, I will have to talk about Mergers and Acquisitions but I find it hard to relate it to law. My presentation sounds more like a business talk. So what should I include in it and what exactly is the role of a lawyer dealing with Mergers and Acquisitions?

Thanks!

M&A is a specialized area of law dealing with not only the contracts, but also the financing, securities, real estate, corporate control and voting rights, technology licenses, and so forth. There may well be different laws that apply to different parts of the company, or its assets, so you may need a team of attorneys in more than one state. If done improperly, the shareholders of either company can sue the board of directors and the attorneys and accountants who set it all up.

Lawyers are the ones writing the contract. Contracts have to respect the law, plus the lawyer is more qualified to determine what rights and obligations to put in a contract to make it as advantageous as possible.

How much money does an average lawyer make a year?

How much money does a lawyer make in a month, day, and year ? .... Can you afford that mansion you always wanted ?

Do a search on http://salary.com for lawyer. That will give you a good idea. And this web site is great for checking the salaries for all types of jobs, not just lawyers. Best of all...it is free (no sign-up required either).

Go to the Occupational Outlook Handbook online. It can be found at....

http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos053.htm

It is really awesome. It tells you all about the nature of the work, how much you can expect to earn, type of education required, etc. It is a very good resource. I've used it many times when researching career options.

Its like any profession that works with a client base - if you work your a-- off you can make tons of money. But how will you enjoy the mansion you've always wanted if you work 18 hours a day/ 7 days a week. I'm speaking from experience - don't go into a profession just because it pays well. If you think you'll like it AND it pays well - great. But go for something that you'll enjoy and be happy with the house you can afford.

What is the reasonable fees a lawyer charge per court session ?

My lawyer is charging me 2000 US Dollars per her court session , is she charging me high or reasonable enough ? Ohh yes the case is just a misdemeanor so i dont need to attend the court hearing .

Call your local bar association and ask them the prevailing rates in the area--low and high. They can probably give you the best information in the shortest amount of time.

it depends. my lawyer charges what is about $1000, so i think 2000 is a little high, but then again, that may be a competative rate where you are. ask around other law firms, and see what they would charge you.

It depends on the degree of difficulty of the case and what tasks will be involved. The only answer is call and shop around.

Sounds high but I don't know what the charges in your area are in general or if she is a highly sought after attorney. Do some comparative shopping.

What kind of information does a lawyer need to file a lawsuit?

What kind of information does a lawyer need to file a personal injury lawsuit? If you have health insurance from the state do they contact the state that supply you with the health insurance to get all the medical bills they paid and what not?

What are some advantages and disadvantages of becoming a lawyer?

I am only thirteen, but I have already started thinking about possible careers. I would like it to involve something related to criminal justice. Therefore, I'm asking to ask you folks (preferably people that know what they're talking about) what I need to do to become a lawyer.

Is law school challenging?

Perhaps tell me the ups and downs of being a lawyer?

In advance, thanks for your suggestions.

Law school is VERY challenging. Start working at it now. You have to have good grades, especially in college, to be able to get into a good law school. But to get into a good law school, it helps if you come from a good undergraduate program (i.e. a top ranked university).

If you want to be a prosecutor, you will want to find a good criminal trial advocacy program. This will give you all the know-how to become a good prosecutor.

As I said, law school is very challenging, some more than others. You can use this challenge to make yourself a better lawyer, or you can try to avoid it by doing the bare minimum to pass. You will want to have good grades in law school so that you can get a good job after-wards.

There are ups and downs of being a lawyer, just like any other job. Trials are a lot more boring (from a lay person's perspective) than on television. They take a lot more time. When you watch something on a legal procedural show, it seems like they go to trial almost the same week as the crime. In reality, it can be over a year after the crime. Civil trials can be longer. Furthermore, most criminals "plead" out, meaning that you don't even go to trial. But for the right person, they can be very rewarding.

Here's what you do: find the courthouse in your jurisdiction (preferably state district courthouse) and call up the clerk and find out when there is going to be a criminal trial for you to go and watch. Have someone take you to the courthouse, and watch as much of the trial as possible. If it still interests you, then you might just have the makings to be a lawyer.

How long does it take to become a lawyer or phycologist?

I am in 9th grade and want to become a phycologist or a lawyer . So what are some good classes for each individually? Also How long would it take to become a lawyer or a phycologist? Thankyou, Any help is appreciated.

Lawyer, takes seven years of education in total; four at undergraduate level and three years of law school. Then you will probably take 6-12months after you graduate to study for the bar exam.

A psychologist takes four years of undergraduate studies followed by four-six years for a Ph.D. or Psy.D and then about two years of supervised experience. Once you graduate, you must then pass the written license exam.

How can you become a doctor and a lawyer in college?

Question: How can you become a doctor and a lawyer. Do you have to balance your sceduel? Or do you have to become a doctor first then a lawyer, or the other way around? Can you really balance classes, at Harvard medical and law?

You cannot go to law school and med school at the same time. They are both full-time programs that will take up all of your time. You would need to become one first and then the other one. It doesn't matter which one you do first though.

I do not believe that Harvard offers a duel degree (JD/MD) program and I am quite sure that since it does not you are unable to study at both the law and medical schools, but I could be mistaken on that.

At the law school which I graduated from, they offered a joint JD/MD degree program and that is ideally what you are looking for as these programs do all of the balancing for you and that takes a load off when planning your schedule.

These programs typically six years to complete and one usually takes the first two years of law school as one unit and the first three phases of medical school as one unit, but it is up to you which track you start first.

I don't know about a lawyer, but I am also looking into becoming a doctor. You will first have to get a four year degree. There are certain courses you will have to take like, organic chemistry, biology, english, calculus or some other advanced math class. Anyway, check online or at the college you wish to apply and see what they require. It is not a requirement, but they recommend that you major in some sort of science. I think I am going to major in biology. It is a heck of a lot easier than organic chemistry. So after you obtain a four year degree, and maintain a GPA of at least 3.75, you must take this test called the Medical College Admissions Test, or the MCAT. The MCAT is basically like the SAT, or ACT, but it's on steriods. If you aim to score a 10 in each section, you will do fine. After you test high enough to even be considered, you will have to start applying to medical schools. This requires essay writing, interviews, more tests, ect. If you end up getting accepted into medical school, you start your medical training. This involves learning about different diseases, how to diagnose patients, and learning about the health care of patients. The first two years is a lot of studying and test taking, then the last two years are a lot of hands on with actual patients. After you finish medical school, you must take your residency test and train more extensively. The residency is basically what you want to do as a doctor. Do you want to work with OB/GYN, do you want to be a surgon, would you like to be a pediatrication? ect..... Anyway, it costs about $175,000 to $250,000 depending on where you go. (It may be more or less in some cases.) You can look into grants and student loans though for assisstance. The average time it takes to become a doctor is 12 years. It could be as little at 11, or as high as 16-18. Again, it just depends on what you want to get into exactly. Anyway, I hope this helped you. Good Luck!!! Maybe one day we'll be working together at a hospital in the future. If you have any further questions about becoming a doctor, try out this link. I found it to be very helpful:

There is no way in hell, someone could afford that or balance that

How can I find a lawyer who does not require a retainer upfront?

I need to find a lawyer that will accept payments. I need help fast!

Depends on the type of case you have. If it is a personal injury case, in most states no retainer is required at all. Generically I would contact your state's bar association and seek a referral to a lawyer referral program or legal aid.

Most will accept payments. A retainer is NOT full payment in advance. It is your down payment. Depending on the case, they may work on a contingency basis. That means they agree to take a percentage of whatever they win as payment. If you lose, they don't get paid.

In the past two years I've used http://badproducts.com/ twice before for malpractice case and they referred me to two different lawyers, both winning me the case. Evaluation form on the website is free and they just took a % of my settlement, worked out well. maybe they can help you too, good luck!

How can i find a lawyer to sue my phone and insurance company?

For the past two years I have been dealing with claims and disputes regarding my former auto insurance company and telephone company (separate issues). Basically, they have both screwed me and now I want to try to do something about it by suing them. Trust me, i am not the type of person who would ever have done this in the past, but enough is enough. What kind of lawyer should i search for? Are there any sites i can search to find them? What should i be cautious about? Has anyone ever had to sue their auto insurance company for breach of contract?

chances are, when you signed all that paperwork for you insurqance and phone, you entered into an agreement to waive your right to sue, and entered into an arbitration agreement. the agreement probably requires you to fly somewhere, pay for 1/2 the expense of arbitraution ($5,000 give or take), and if you win you get your money. but the arbitratoir decides, and the agreement allows the company to pick the arbitrator (hello).

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=arbitration+agreements&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g10

chances are with the auto ins that unless there are

like medical bills to reclaim money from somewhere

(as in a ins. co. or a company to sue) it will be tough

to find an atty that will take it without a lot of $ up front

and the phone co. with their army of lawyers?

forget it

How can i become a lawyer in armed forces?

Im currently in a University of California and i have a full ride. I want to become a lawyer and eventually pursue a political career. They have the ROTC program at my school, but i dont need the money. Im out of shape so the benefits to ROTC would be getting in shape etc. But i wanted to know. Would it be better to Graduate and go to law school then go to military or join rotc and puruse law school while in army?

Through ROTC when you graduate and recieve your commission from you school, you can apply for an educational delay. You will have your three years to graduate law school coming into the Army then as CPT in JAG. Only caveat is, most likely you will be paying for your education or other scholarship. I have two friends who both went this route, I myself considered it but went straight in as an Armor officer instead. One friend is still in JAG, the other is a Corp in NYC. Best of luck to you, ROTC is a great program.

The Army has a program to put people through law school. If you don't need the money then I wouldn't suggest it. There is a program that will take someone with a pre-law or Poli-Sci degree and put them in a fast track commissioning program. I would recommend finishing law school and passing the bar (to become a lawyer in the military you have to pass the bar in a state, any state) and deciding from there. A civilian career would be much more lucrative and would have better benefits than a military career for someone with political aspirations. In the military you don't get to deal with law making.

If you don't need the money, then don't join rotc now. You can join regular nrotc, nrotc mo or rotc in Law School and it will pick up the tuition for at least two years. Army rotc has a three year program so it could pick up the tuition for every year of law school. If you did a combined JD/MBA or similar 4 year program, the nrotc or nrotc mo 4 year program would pay the tuition all 4 years.

nrotc, nrtoc mo and rotc pay full tuition. afrotc is usually capped at 15,000/year.

The Law Schools at Berkeley and UCLA are going to cost around $40,000 next year for in state and Davis is going to be around $35,000. This will not specifically guarantee you working as a JAG as being in a specific JAG program would but it will pay the tuition.

You do not pursue that degree while in the military, you either have it prior to enlisting, or you use the GI Bill to make getting it easier. Your choice.

How can a Peruvian Lawyer become a Lawyer in California?

My wife is a lawyer in Peru. She is interested in becoming a lawyer in California. What is the quickest and easiest route for her to take to become elligible to take and pass the California Bar Exam?

Well, that will actually require a lot of studying. The main reason is because laws in CA are different from the laws in Peru. After that, she should be able to take a test in CA.

there are a variety of bar exam review courses available.

There may be some online, the website below lists a few

What are good characteristics that make up a good criminal lawyer?

I have had my mind set on becoming a lawyer since I was little but I am beginning to second guess it. The reason being is that I dont know if I have interest and what it takes to become a good lawyer. Can anyone tell me characteristics that make up a good lawyer.

You must be very thorough and good attention to details. In other word, very very observant and meticulous.

If you are referring to a criminal defense lawyer, then you have to be able to put aside your feelings about the client being guilty or not guilty. Because your job will be to defend the civil rights of the accused person, not the fact of whether he or she committed the crime. For example, if a person commits a crime but the law enforcement violated his civil rights somehow, such as not following procedure correctly, it could cost them the trial. The criminal walks free because his civil rights were violated even though he may have raped or murdered someone. You have to live with that.

ambitious, charasmatic, quick-witted, efficient, thinking outside the box, able to put oneself in another's position, intelligent, unrelenting, sympathetic, honest, willing to take risks, and must seek justice at all times. that's who i would want to protect the world from crime.

How do I trust my lawyer and accountant?

I am starting a business plan for a business that will grow from something small to very big. How do I find a lawyer and accountant that I can trust through the process? Someone who is qualified enough to make the right moves, someone who won't be shady, someone who looks out for my best interests, and won't skim off the top?

Good luck, you know what that say about lawyers, with regard to a accountant. Just take a look a wall street, CASE CLOSE.

This sounds wierd, but alot of businesses do this, especially when dealing with sensitive material.

Call a Jehovah's Witness temple and ask if there's anyone there that can fill the job you need.

JW's entire eternity is based on works and not sinning, so they aren't going to take your cash or scam you, because to them, it's an eternity in hell.

You are hiring soeone to work for you so interview several candidates and then hire the one you believe you can trust and work with.

There's no such person. You just have to pick one and hope for the best.

They are all out for profit.

Can a lawyer in Ontario help a friend sue someone on his own time?

My friend is being threatened with court from her ex's lawyer, who happens to be his old friend from school. The lawyer is using his personal email for their exchanges, even though he works for a law firm. It's obvious he's doing this work for free on behalf of his "friend". Shouldn't he be using his work email address for his threats? Or do you think he's afraid of his bosses finding out what he's doing?

Up to his employer; lawyers have a lot of leeway to act.

Maybe, maybe not. His employer may frown on doing work, even for no fee, on the side because of insurance liability issues. If he is just giving advice, it is probably OK, but if he formally represents him, that may not be OK.

lawyers can give away thier time as they chose. it is called pro bono work. His boss may not like the idea of Him doing pro bono on his time but legally he can do that if he wishes. profesionally it could cause him problems depending on how his associates feel about how he is using his time. This is possibly why he is using private email.

Can a lawyer defend a man when the lawyer's daughter is a witness for the prosecution?

A man is being charged with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crime. He hit a taxi while drunk, killing the driver and Girl A. Girl B was in the taxi and suffered injuries. The defendant hired Girl B's father (defendant didn't know it was her father) as a lawyer and the father accepted because this is the kind of case that would make his career. His daughter lives at home with him, is over 21 and is a witness for the prosecution. Can he legally defend this man? Or is this scenario impossible?

Yes he can.

There is a potential conflict of interest, but the law about such conflicts is that the client has the right to waive conflict after being fully advised.

So if the lawyer has disclosed to his client that his daughter was injured in the accident and will be a witness and the client chooses, he can still use him.

(I wouldn't.... but it's the clients call.)

Richard

Believe it or not, Lawyers are held to high standards of ethics and professional conduct. As such, it is highly unlikely that an attorney would continue representing such a client.

However, there is no technical violation of the Rules of Professional Conduct and hence, no actual "Conflict of Interest" as other(s) suggest. For a conflict of interest to occur, representation of a client would have to be directly adverse to another client. Under this fact scenario, no former client of the attorney would be adversely affected, directly or otherwise.

rent_diva34, It's unfortunate to hear about your situation. I was injured once when a car backed over my foot at work. My employer attempted to settle with me fast because I knew they were try to get me to sign some papers to release them from responsibility. I called a recommended injury lawyer in my area who gave me useful advice and I was able to get a small settlement to cover my insurance bills that weren't covered by my primary insurance. I'd find a personal injury in your area. http://www.accidentlawyerlocator.com My personal injury lawyer was willing to answer any and all questions I had because they stand to make some money at the same time. Try visiting a injury lawyer to see if they can help.

Good Luck

No since it would be a conflict of interest. The lawyer would probably try to help the prosecution since his daughter was one of the victims. Attorney's have a professional responsibility to try and defend their clients by using their knowledge of the law.

This would be a severe conflict of interest... The judge would probably catch this and dismiss the attorney, if the attorney doesn't recuse himself.

If neither happened, the lawyer could face serious ethics issues from the state bar.

No the Judge wouldn't go for that there would be a "Conflict of interest".

How to chose a good business lawyer?

I'm looking to start a business, but am not sure what to look for in a good business lawyer. I'm going to need help drafting letters in the hopes of gaining corporate assistance in starting the business.

But I've never needed a lawyer before and want to make sure I get a good one that hopefully won't eat up the small budget that I have.

Any lawyers out there with any advice on the subject? I just want to make sure that my business idea stays mine and don't want some shady lawyer that's going to run off with my plan the minute they hear about it.

Thank you!

Find a lawyer by referral that other small or medium sized businesses you know use -- businesses that actually have been around and have used the person for a couple years.

Avoid a lawyer that offers to take equity in your company in lieu of a fee or a lawyer who does not appear to have any knowledge in small business formation or who promises to "hook you up" with investors he or she knows for a fee.

What you want is a small business lawyer that will offer you a fair fee and is doing well enough that they have no interest in making a fast buck off of ripping you off but is not so busy that they will ignore you.

Be forewarned that you will likely need to put forward a retainer. Hopefully you can talk to whoever is your referall and figure out what they did as a retainer.

Search using www.yahoo.com/search

I went through the Better Business Bureau who then referred me to the Bar Association which referred to some good business lawyers in my state.

regarding forms, you can check allbusiness.com - they are priced, but you can get a partial preview or preview of the table of contents. you can get some ideas while reading it

1.) Call the state bar attorney referral line.

2.) Ask your friend.

3.) Do not trust advertizement.

My partner and I do not advertize, all of our clients are by word of mouth. We turn away most people that want to hire us (more than 80%).

Lawyers, like other professionals, provide services. Shop around and compare prices and services offered. Personal references are always best. Findlaw.com is a good resource to find business forms and attorneys in your area. You can access it from this URL:

Good luck.

When you want to hire a lawyer especially personal injury lawyer what information you should look for?

When you want to hire a lawyer especially personal injury lawyer what information you should look for or what questions you will ask from the lawyer? What information needs to be included in the signed documentation such as fee, etc?

For most personal injury cases it does matter too much who you get. The case is most likely going to be settled and you will not go to court. One important area are the fees. Most lawyers charge a third and subtract costs. You can find a lawyer that will do charge 20-25% in fees but you have to look for them.

The way a typical personal injury case works is you go through evaluation and treatment. After your treatment is done the attorney sends a letter to the insurance co. saying pay my client such and such amount of money. The insurance co. says no we will only pay this. Then the attorney and insurance company go back and forth and reach a final amount. Most people will take it. Pretty simple.

That was a very simplified version. I assumed you have had an auto accident. The money you get is usually based on whose fault it is, the severity of injury, medical records, and the policy limits of insurance.

Things to consider. How good is the attorney about getting back to you. Keep in contact to make sure attorney is aggressively going after insurance company. Things to ask attorney, ask if you medical bills will be taken out of your settlement. Also, be patient. Most clients get impatient, it takes a long time for treatment, etc., usually up to a year to settle case withou trial. With trial it could be two years. But if you are too hurried you could settle for a lower amount than what you could have gotten.

You can submit your case to http://www.selectcounsel.com. Your case will be reviewed and if it is a good case one of the best lawyers in your area will take your case at no fee to you. Good luck.

Go to lawyer.com to search for one. This is a legitimate website, and it's free. Once you put all your info in, you will be given referrals to attorneys in your area. If you don't want to use the website, call the New York State Bar Association and ask them for referrals. This is a free service as well.

I am sure ANY lawyer would love to take on this case. Look in your phonebook, most state what they specialize in.

How do I protect my privacy from a lawyer who wants to disclose private info to my estranged husband?

I am a birthmother trying to get my sons adoption finalized, I need a lawyer who SPECIALIZES in adoption and can help me stop the lawyer of adoptive family telling my estranged husband information concerning the adoption.

The other answer is right if your estranged husband is the childs father all attemps to contact him must and will be used.

Its the law to contact the birth father. The attorney who represents the adoptive couple would not be doing his duty or his clients any favors not trying to make sure everything was done in accordance with the laws. A judge will not sign adoption papers until he knows the father is not wanting custody. You cant just give his rights away, only a judge can do that.

They will even run an ad in the paper where he lives for up to 6 weeks asking him to come forward if he intends to protest the adoption.

If after the ad has ran and he hasn't come forward the adoption can proceed without his permission.

is he the father?

If the man is the biological father, he must be notified by law of the adoption, otherwise, he could eventually turn up and sue for custody, which obviously the adoptive parents would not want to have happen.

Who's privacy are you seeking to protect? Yours or your son's?

If your estranged husband is the biological father, attempts must be made to find him and notify him of the proceedings or else the adoption will not be legal.

How can I find a lawyer in new york city that is really good in cases concerning Police Brutality?

I have a lawyer now that is not charging me, and is not progressing in my case at all. All I get is court date after court date without the trial starting. It's been 10 months now since the incident and no trial started yet.

10 months is nothing in a case like that. Expect to have the pre-trial stuff take years. what does your attorney tell yo is the reason? s/he should be setting your expecations reasonably - maybe they do not realize you are not clear on the overall process and likely schedule? Nothing wrong with asking for clarification.

OTOH, if you are not paying the attorney, and they arenot on some sort of contingency, then expect that work to be lowest priority. They have bills to pay you know! If it is immportant to you, then pay for the services, and prepare ways to have the other party re-imburse at some point.

Research news accounts of previous police brutality cases in NYC. Surely the names of the attorneys are mentioned.

Then use google and your yellow pages to find them.

That is not what I said at all.

Do you work for free?

You could pay her $100/hour, and it will stil take forever. The cops are the ones dragging it out.

Read the papers like I said. You get what you pay for. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20071010085824AA63QJi&kid=JZtrWkHAFmmhduEz4tit&s=comm&date=2007-10-12+15%3A01%3A49&.crumb=

Well you get what you pay for. Being in NYC we have lots of options...just call around - there's a lawyer on every block

What happens when a Lawyer calls you for an unpaid credit card?

I have stopped paying on a credit card. I just don't have it right now. All of a sudden I get a phone call from a lawyer. What does this mean. Should I talk to this person.

Are they going to try to settle the account, or send me to jail.

Under the law there is no difference between a "lawyer" who collects debts and a debt collector.

They cannot send you to jail. Credit card debt is a civil matter. The only thing that they can do is to take you to civil court to try to get a judgment against you. If they threaten to put you in jail, they have committed a crime.

Do not talk with them over the phone. They are trained to get the best of you, and they will use what you tell them against you.

The next time they call tell them that they have 5 business days to send you a letter explaining why they are calling you (that is the law).

If and when you get that letter from them, fire back with a "debt validation" letter. Make them verify that the debt is yours and that they do indeed have a legal right to collect from you.

Include a paragraph informing them that they must cease all collection activity until the debt is validated. Also, state that they can only contact you by mail to an address that you specify, and again only after the debt has been validated.

If you decide to settle, do not pay them a penny before you get a "pay for delete" agreement with the collection agency.

They can't send you to jail for credit card debt... If you have money in the bank you could offer to settle, but they won't take payments, you offer them half of the amount paid in one lump sum and they might take it.

If you can't do that all you can do is let him know how poor you are and tell him you'd like to settle in the future but you're unemployed or something and have no money at all at the moment. Ask him not to call you more than once per month, and politely and tactfully let him know that you really do want to settle it in the future but you can't right now and if they decide to sue you it will only push you into bankruptcy when you otherwise might be able to avoid it.

The last thing they want is for you to file bankrupt, because then you won't have to pay them anything at all.

Lawyers very rarely make calls in regards to debts. They will send a letter demanding payment within a certain time frame or they will take you to court. If it is a collection agency, do not give them any info in regards to your credit card or checking account. Don't even verify your home address if they ask.

Stay off the phone! That's the first thing. Second, get everything is writing. Third, DENY DENY DENY. Make them prove the debt is yours and that they are legally entitled to collect it.

And no you are not going to jail. This is just a B.S. (and ILLEGAL) scare tactic used. Don't let it rattle you.

Finally, get very familiar with FDCPA , FCRA and TCPA.

Can you become a lawyer and then work at an investmant bank?

if you were a lawyer for discrimination claims, family, and immigration cases for awhile can you turn around and work in an investmant bank as a consultant or stock broker?

also you have a JD/MBA?

You're free to do what ever you wish...though your background doesn't really fit into investment banking. Why not take some courses in securities law than seek to work in an investment bank? They're always willing to let someone try being a broker...but know this...if you're not well connected and can't bring in accounts that TRADE or want to be under management than you'll be out very, very quickly. Additionally, the days of folks working in investment banking house brokerage divisions for life are LONG GONE...today most burn out or fry due to the stresses involved in handling OPM within 3-5 years. So don't think of making a career of it. GOOD LUCK!

Yes you can work outside the legal profession.

You could apply to an investment banker for a position, or apply to any major brokerage firm for employment as a sales rep.

You would be better off finding an large financial institution that would take you into their securities divisions.

Banks & insurance companies are impressed with MBAs, whereas broker/dealers and mutual funds are more interested in your personality and background

Good luck on your hunting

.

sure. many lawyers work for non law related busineses,, coz most law firm only hire friends or family law grads

What is the best way to hire a business lawyer?

I'm on a shoe string budget and need to find a lawyer to write up some contracts. I want to approach a young lawyer fresh out of school because I think those types of newcomers may charge a cheaper rate to get their foot in the door.. Is that a good approach? What I am needing is to have solid sponsorship contracts and venue rental agreements. Is there a better way to get these agreements other than paying a lawyer to go over them? Your information is appreciated.

This is a pay me now or pay (dearly) later if something goes wrong.

Discuss your situation with an Experienced corporate lawyer. The 1st interview is generally no charge...it'll get you going in the right direction.

Better spend a few bucks now than lose everything at a future date.....

How much does a lawyer get paid on average?

Much appreciated if you could also say what type of lawyer and per week or per year or something.

I think Tony's response was superb. It covered the various areas and in sufficient detail. Well done Tony.

But the point is, that the pay varies considerably!

It varies by practice area (criminal, intellectual property, family law, etc.), by geographical area, by region type (urban, suburban, rural), by reputation, size of firm experience, etc. Lots of things!

In the US

legal aid attorneys make around 30k a year as do most entry level state law jobs.

State court judges in the Midwest make around 90K

Federal judges are around 160k

The average cos t per hour in civil work in the Midwest for private practice is 150 an hour

Criminal work is more.

Lawyers paid for court appointed work in the federal system is around 130 an hour

Most small firm Midwest PP lawyers average net around 70k a year

High Street Solicitors earn anything between £20 - £45000 a year depending on location - specialist solicitors including employment, commercial, tax etc earn more and an average salary would be in the £70-£100k range.

Far and away highest earning solicitors are those who work in the City of London - training salaries can exceed £60000 and a senior associate in a large firm of corporate solicitors can easily earn £250 000 a year but competition for these places is intense (around 3000 applicants annually for one firm which offers 30 places) and it's very demanding and high pressure work. Divorce, nervous breakdowns, alcoholism and drug use are common in this group - one mistake can end your career at any time or stage and, especially in the early years, working continuously for 72 hours is not unusual. Most large firms have a target of around 1800 billable hours annually and training, internal work, non billable hours eat into the working week as well so 48 hours is generally a minimum working week and there is no maximum.

A side bonus for nights off is that there are generally free tickets available for shows, football games, concerts etc since most solicitors book such events in advance and then can't attend when a deal comes in - most firms refund solicitors for having to cancel prebooked holidays when a deal stops the holiday from being taken but it's hard on family life.

Far less than the public think. But still good. I can only answer from a criminal law perspective:

High Street Legal Aid Solicitors' firm - Employed Solicitor can expect £25k-£35k. Partner of a reasonably sized firm should take about £70k plus.

Criminal Barrister just starting out will turn over about £40k (but must pay Chambers fees - usually around 15% of their income plus a standing rent of about £200-£300 per month plus VAT). Income rises with reputation since we're self-employed. Can be very lucrative if you land a decent-sized case. £150k plus per year not impossible after about 10 years.

Crown Prosecution salaries are a matter of public record so check out www.cps.gov.uk where they range from about £20k (unqualified assistant prosecutor) to about £30k (prosecutor), £46k for Crown Advocate, £60k for senior crown advocate and then about £90k for a Principal Crown Advocate.

District Judge in the Magistrates will earn £104k per year. Crown Court Judge £126k. High Court, Court of Appeal and House of Lords earn progressively more - again, it's on-line on ministry of justice website.

Criminal Law is the least well-paid. Family and Civil practitioners can make a hell of a lot more. If employed, you can earn up to about £90k if you're in London doing commercial law. But if you're a partner in a firm that does certain types of commercial work, tax, large-scale industrial injury etc. then 7-figure salaries are not unheard of. But then why not? it's just a business - if you're any good you make lots of money. If you're not, you don't. Just like if you owned a factory or software company or something. Legal Services are a product with customers just like anything else I suppose. The more you sell, the more you make.

Apart from Criminal Law. Which is what I do. We don't expect to earn 7-figure salaries!

The law market is not doing well in this economy. Lawyers are being laid off all over the country. This means that a lot of them are also taking a cut in pay, or working more and more hours for the pay they get.

Fortunately, there are a lot of websites dedicated to helping qualified lawyers find high quality jobs.

For a law student right out of school, their starting salary can be as high as $160,000. As you get more experience in the firm, your salary will increase.

TOO MUCH.

Three hundred an hour is not unheard of, and some much more than that.

£100 an hour basic standard lawyer that is one with a small brain. Then plus each letter an each phone call it goes on and on overpaid geeks.
