What are some advantages and disadvantages of becoming a lawyer?

I am only thirteen, but I have already started thinking about possible careers. I would like it to involve something related to criminal justice. Therefore, I'm asking to ask you folks (preferably people that know what they're talking about) what I need to do to become a lawyer.

Is law school challenging?

Perhaps tell me the ups and downs of being a lawyer?

In advance, thanks for your suggestions.

Law school is VERY challenging. Start working at it now. You have to have good grades, especially in college, to be able to get into a good law school. But to get into a good law school, it helps if you come from a good undergraduate program (i.e. a top ranked university).

If you want to be a prosecutor, you will want to find a good criminal trial advocacy program. This will give you all the know-how to become a good prosecutor.

As I said, law school is very challenging, some more than others. You can use this challenge to make yourself a better lawyer, or you can try to avoid it by doing the bare minimum to pass. You will want to have good grades in law school so that you can get a good job after-wards.

There are ups and downs of being a lawyer, just like any other job. Trials are a lot more boring (from a lay person's perspective) than on television. They take a lot more time. When you watch something on a legal procedural show, it seems like they go to trial almost the same week as the crime. In reality, it can be over a year after the crime. Civil trials can be longer. Furthermore, most criminals "plead" out, meaning that you don't even go to trial. But for the right person, they can be very rewarding.

Here's what you do: find the courthouse in your jurisdiction (preferably state district courthouse) and call up the clerk and find out when there is going to be a criminal trial for you to go and watch. Have someone take you to the courthouse, and watch as much of the trial as possible. If it still interests you, then you might just have the makings to be a lawyer.
